British National Granted Bail in AgustaWestland Case After 6 Years; Highlights Right to Speedy Trial, Article 21
The Delhi High Court granted bail to a British national, accused in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland money laundering case, after over six years in custody without trial commencement. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma cited the prolonged incarceration as a violation of the right to a speedy trial under Article 21 of the Constitution. Despite stringent bail conditions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the court emphasized that indefinite custody was unjust. The accused, extradited from Dubai in 2018, was involved in irregularities concerning the purchase of VVIP helicopters from AgustaWestland. Bail was granted on a bond and surety of Rs 5 lakh each.
