MoSPI Explores Revising GDP Base Year, Enhancing Informal Sector Estimates with Digitalization and Stakeholder Collaboration
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) held a consultation in New Delhi to discuss revising the GDP base year and improving the estimation of the informal sector's contribution. The informal sector accounted for about 45% of GDP in FY 2022-23, with 61% of women in non-agricultural sectors working informally. The event highlighted the impact of digitalization on informality, with discussions on incorporating data from GST, digital payments, and other administrative sources. MoSPI aims to enhance GDP estimates through collaboration with various stakeholders and has initiated monthly and quarterly statistics on employment and the informal sector.
