Ban on Export of Iron Ore
There is no proposal to ban export of high grade iron-ore. However, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, vide its order dated 29th July, 2011, suspended mining operations and transportation of iron ore in Bellary District, Karnataka, in view of over exploitation and subsequently also directed that no part of the iron ore production in Bellary shall be exported till further orders.
Export duty on both iron ore ‘fines’ and ‘lumps’ have been increased to 30% ad valorem w.e.f. 30th December, 2011 and differential railway freight is imposed on iron ore movement meant for exports.
There are no estimates of losses on iron-ore exported illegally.
This information was given by Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of State for Commerce, Industry and in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.

Export controls on iron ore: judicial suspension restricts Bellary production exports; duties and freight measures imposed. A judicial order suspended mining and transportation of iron ore in Bellary district and directed that no Bellary production be exported; export controls were reinforced by an increased ad valorem export duty on fines and lumps effective 30 December 2011 and by imposing differential railway freight on iron ore destined for export, and the government reported no estimates of losses from illegal exports.Press 'Enter' after typing page number.
