Rs. 135.86 crore have been spent under the scheme for Technology Upgradation/ Establishment/ Modernization of Food Processing Industries as on 29.02.2012 in 2011-12.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries under its plan scheme for Technology Upgradation/ Establishment/ Modernization of Food Processing Industries extends financial assistance to food processing units in the form of grant-in-aid @ 25% of the cost of plant & machinery and technical civil works subject to maximum of Rs. 50.00 lakh in general areas and @ 33.33% subject to a maximum of Rs. 75.00 lakh in difficult areas such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and North Eastern States, A&N Islands, Lakshadweep and ITDP areas. The Ministry under the various schemes provides financial assistance to increase the production of packaged food items which are considered to be more safe and hygienic.

This information was given by Dr. Charan Das Mahant, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

Grant-in-aid for food processing modernization sets percentage rates and higher maxima for difficult areas to promote packaged food production. Ministry scheme provides financial assistance for Technology Upgradation, Establishment and Modernization of food processing units by way of grant-in-aid covering plant and machinery and technical civil works; the grant is 25% of eligible costs subject to a ceiling in general areas and 33.33% subject to a higher ceiling in designated difficult areas to incentivise modernisation and packaged food production.
