<h1>Direct Tax Collections Surge 40% in April 2007-Feb 2008; Mumbai Leads Growth with 65.97% Increase.</h1> Direct tax collections from April 1, 2007, to February 15, 2008, grew by over 40%, reaching Rs.2,28,745 crore, compared to Rs.1,61,776 crore in the previous fiscal. This represents 85% of the budgeted target of Rs.2,67,490 crore. Corporate Tax increased by 38.78% to Rs.1,38,073 crore, while Personal Income Tax rose by 45.64% to Rs.90,356 crore. Securities Transaction Tax and Fringe Benefit Tax grew by 84.64% and 29.75%, respectively. The Mumbai region showed the highest growth at 65.97%, contributing 36.86% to the national collections. Improved tax administration and compliance are reflected in the growth of self-assessment tax and tax deducted at source.
