India Considers Mandatory Silver Hallmarking; BIS to Consult Stakeholders on Feasibility Within 3-6 Months.
The government is considering mandatory hallmarking for silver jewelry and artifacts due to consumer demand. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been tasked with assessing the feasibility and consulting stakeholders, including consumers and ornament dealers. Currently, silver hallmarking is voluntary, but BIS could implement mandatory hallmarking within 3-6 months. This initiative follows the successful mandatory hallmarking of gold, which began in June 2021. Stakeholders from various states have expressed support for extending hallmarking to silver. The BIS, responsible for setting quality standards, will conduct further consultations before a final decision is made.
