India's Bank NPAs Hit 12-Year Low at 2.6% in Sept 2024; Rising Write-Offs in Private Banks Raise Concerns.
The Reserve Bank of India reported that the gross non-performing assets (GNPA) of banks fell to a 12-year low of 2.6% in September 2024, attributed to reduced slippages and steady credit demand. However, there is concern over increased write-offs, particularly in private sector banks, potentially obscuring issues in unsecured lending. The net NPA ratio stood at 0.6%. The Financial Stability Report highlighted improved asset quality across sectors, a decline in the share of large borrowers in GNPA, and enhanced profitability for scheduled commercial banks. The banking stability indicator also showed improvement, supported by strong capital buffers and earnings.
