India Boosts IP Facilitator Fees by 100% to Encourage Startup Patent and Trademark Filings Under Revised 2022 Scheme.
The Indian government revised the Scheme for Intellectual Property Protection to increase the professional charges for IP facilitators, aiming to boost IP filings by startups. Since its inception in 2016, the scheme has significantly increased patent and trademark applications by startups, with patent filings rising from 179 in 2016-17 to 1500 in 2021-22, and trademark filings from 4 to 8649 in the same period. The revised scheme, effective from November 2022, includes a fee increase for facilitators by at least 100%, alongside offering startups fee rebates and fast-track examination provisions to further encourage IP filings.
