India's 2008 Agricultural Debt Waiver Scheme Relieved Farmers' Debts, Reimbursed Rs. 52,419.88 Crore to Lenders.
The Government of India implemented the Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme (ADWDRS) in 2008 to alleviate the debt burden on farmers and enable them to access fresh credit. The scheme covered agricultural loans disbursed between April 1997 and March 2007 that were overdue as of December 2007 and unpaid by February 2008. The debt waiver component concluded in June 2008, while the debt relief portion ended in June 2010. To date, the government has reimbursed Rs. 52,419.88 crore to lending institutions under this scheme, as reported by the Minister of State for Finance in a Lok Sabha session.
