India Boosts Local Manufacturing: Preference to Class-I & II Suppliers in Public Procurement, Railways Cut Imports.
The Government of India has implemented the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order, 2017, amended in 2020, to boost local manufacturing and employment. This order mandates that only Class-I and Class-II local suppliers can bid for contracts, with Class-I suppliers given priority where local capacity exists. The Department of Telecommunications and Ministry of Railways have issued orders to promote local manufacturing in their sectors. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive Scheme has been approved for ten sectors to enhance manufacturing and exports. The Railways have significantly reduced imports by increasing local procurement.
