World Bank & India Sign $88M Loan to Modernize Assam's Ferry Services on Brahmaputra River, Focus on Safety & Sustainability.
The World Bank and the Government of India have signed an $88 million loan agreement to modernize Assam's inland water transport sector, particularly its passenger ferry services on the Brahmaputra River. The Assam Inland Water Transport Project aims to enhance ferry infrastructure, improve service sustainability, and strengthen institutional capacity. It will introduce better-designed terminals and energy-efficient vessels, while also corporatizing ferry operations through the Assam Shipping Company and Assam Ports Company. The project prioritizes safety, comfort, and accessibility, especially for women and vulnerable groups, and promotes sustainable, low-carbon transport options. The loan has a 14.5-year maturity with a five-year grace period.
