India Launches Steel Import Monitoring System to Enhance Policy Intervention and Transparency in Imports.
The Commerce and Industry Minister, along with the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, launched the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS) in New Delhi. Developed in consultation with the Ministry of Steel, SIMS is modeled after the US Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis system. It aims to provide advance information on steel imports to the government and stakeholders, facilitating effective policy interventions. Importers of specified steel products must register online, without human intervention, between 60 and 15 days before the expected arrival of imports. The system, effective from November 1, 2019, requires importers to obtain an automatic registration number for customs clearance.
