Indian Banks Follow RBI Guidelines: No Minimum Balance for BSBD Accounts, Including Jan-Dhan; Transparent Service Charges for Others.
Banks in India, following Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, do not impose a minimum balance requirement for Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts, including those under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). As of March 2019, there were 57.3 crore BSBD accounts, with 61.6% being Jan-Dhan accounts. These accounts offer basic banking services without charges for not maintaining a minimum balance. For non-BSBD accounts, banks can set service charges based on their policies, ensuring they are reasonable. Customers must be informed of service charges and any changes in advance, as stated by the Minister of State for Finance in a Lok Sabha reply.
