India Needs 2.5x Energy Boost for GDP Growth and Upper-Middle Income Status, Says Economic Survey 2018-19.
India must increase its per capita energy consumption by at least 2.5 times to boost its Real Per Capita GDP by $5000 and enter the upper-middle income group, according to the Economic Survey 2018-19. Currently, India's per capita energy consumption is about one-third of the global average. To reach a Human Development Index level of 0.8, consumption needs to quadruple. Despite accounting for 18% of the global population, India uses only 6% of the world's energy. Energy efficiency programs have saved approximately Rs. 53,000 crore and reduced CO2 emissions by 108.28 million tonnes in 2017-18, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy strategies.
