India Abolishes Income-Tax and Indirect Tax Ombudsman Institutions Due to Ineffectiveness and Decline in Complaints.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the abolition of the Income-Tax Ombudsman and Indirect Tax Ombudsman institutions. These bodies, established in 2003 to address public grievances related to tax complaints, have been deemed ineffective compared to existing grievance redressal mechanisms. The number of new complaints handled by these ombudsmen had significantly decreased, with taxpayers opting for alternative methods like CPGRAMS and Aaykar Seva Kendras. The decision also follows a 2011 move to close vacant offices of the Indirect Tax Ombudsman.
