GeM's Womaniya Initiative Boosts Women Entrepreneurs by Promoting Direct Sales to Government, Supporting Gender Equality and Economic Growth.
The Government e Marketplace (GeM) has launched the Womaniya initiative to empower women entrepreneurs and self-help groups by facilitating the sale of handicrafts, handloom, and other products directly to government entities. This initiative aims to foster gender-inclusive economic growth, highlighting that a significant portion of women-owned businesses are self-financed and led by socially-challenged women. By promoting procurement from women entrepreneurs, Womaniya supports poverty alleviation and aligns with government policies for MSMEs. It also contributes to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 5, focusing on gender equality and women empowerment. GeM, established in 2016, is a government-owned platform for procurement.
