CMC Tackles Vanishing Companies: 161 Traced, 77 Still Missing; Legal Actions Ongoing Under Companies Act Section 248.
The Coordination and Monitoring Committee (CMC) was established to address 'vanishing companies,' which are listed companies that disappeared after public issues between 1992 and 2005. Of 238 identified companies, 161 have been traced, while 77 remain unaccounted for. Legal actions under company and criminal law are ongoing against these companies and their directors/promoters. Companies removed from the register under Section 248 of the Companies Act, 2013, do not qualify as vanishing companies. The closure of regional stock exchanges by SEBI does not impact the status of listed companies. The CMC continues its efforts, holding its 30th meeting in July 2017.
