Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100) Review for the week ended 11th June, 2011 (21 Jyaistha, 1933 Saka)

The WPI for the week ended 11^th June, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.8 percent to 198.1 (Provisional) from 196.6 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 12.62 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 11/06/2011 (over 12/06/2010) as compared to 12.86 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 04/06/2011).

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 1.5 percent to 191.3 (Provisional) from 188.4 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of fish-marine (5%), milk (4%), tea and poultry chicken (3% each), jowar and egg (2% each) and moong, fish-inland and fruits & vegetables (1% each). However, the prices of bajra and urad (5% each) and ragi, barley, condiments & spices and pork (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 1.5 percent to 181.2 (Provisional) from 183.9 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of raw cotton (9%), mesta and sunflower (4% each), raw jute (3%) and castor seed, linseed and fodder (1% each). However, the prices of raw silk (7%), groundnut seed (5%), gaur seed (2%) and cotton seed and copra (1% each) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index and annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis for this major group remained unchanged at their previous week's level of 159.9 (Provisional) and 12.84 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 11/06/2011 (over 12/06/2010).

Build up inflation over the week, financial year end and over the year is given in Annexure-I for some important items. Trend of rate of inflation during last six weeks is also given for some important items in Annexure II.

Wholesale Price Index shows primary articles inflation rising driven by food items while fuel and power inflation held steady. Wholesale Price Index data for the week ended 11 June 2011 shows a week on week rise in Primary Articles driven by higher Food Articles prices (including fish, milk, tea, poultry and cereals movements) while Non Food Articles declined; the Fuel & Power index and its point to point annual inflation rate remained unchanged. Annexures provide itemised indices, build up from financial year start, year on year comparisons and six week trend series for key commodities.
