The WPI for the week ended 26^th February, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:

 

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%) 

The index for this major group declined by 0.6 percent to 186.1 (Provisional) from 187.2 (Provisional) for the previous week.

 The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 13.96 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 26/02/2011 (over 27/02/2010) as compared to 14.85 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 19/02/2011). 

 The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

 The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 0.6 percent to 178.4 (Provisional) from 179.5  (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of condiments & spices (7%), fruits & vegetables and masur (2% each) and rice, barley, moong, gram and arhar (1% each).  However, the prices of egg, fish-marine, bajra, fish-inland, poultry chicken and jowar (2% each) and maize, milk and tea (1% each) moved up.

 The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group declined by 0.8 percent to 185.3 (Provisional) from 186.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of flowers (19%), raw rubber (3%), raw silk (2%) and sunflower and raw jute (1% each).  However, the prices of castor seed (6%), niger seed (4%), copra and soyabean (2% each) and gaur seed, groundnut seed and fodder (1% each) moved up.

 The index for 'Minerals' group declined by 0.4 percent to 260.2 (Provisional) from 261.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of zinc concentrate (20%), steatite (10%) and copper ore (8%).  However, the prices of barytes (3%) and iron ore, chromite and sillimanite (1% each) moved up

 FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

 The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 152.4 (Provisional).

 The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 9.48 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 26/02/2011 (over 27/02/2010) as compared to 12.56 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 19/02/2011).

Wholesale price index movement shows easing in primary articles while fuel and power inflation moderates year-on-year. Wholesale Price Index for the week ended 26 February 2011 shows the Primary Articles major group declined week on week with lower point to point annual inflation than the prior week, driven by decreases in Food Articles, Non Food Articles and Minerals for specified commodities, while Fuel & Power remained unchanged week on week though its year on year inflation moderated; the release supplies detailed subgroup indices, build up statistics and a commodity table.
