of <h1>All Indian Higher Education Institutions to Join National Knowledge Network by March 2012 for Enhanced Connectivity.</h1> The Union Finance Minister announced that by March 2012, all 1,500 higher learning and research institutions will be connected to the National Knowledge Network (NKN) via an optical fiber backbone. This initiative, part of the Union Budget for 2011-12, aims to enhance educational and research connectivity. During the current year, 190 institutions are set to be connected to the NKN. The network was initially approved in March 2010.
