1.     The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries (base: 2004-05) is given at the Annexure.

2.     The Eight Core Industries comprise nearly 38 % of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).  The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 169.6 in August, 2015, which was 2.6 % higher compared to the index of August, 2014. Its cumulative growth during April to August, 2015-16 was 2.2 %.

Coal

3.     Coal production (weight: 4.38 %) increased by 0.4 % in August, 2015 over August, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 4.6 % over corresponding period of previous year.

Crude Oil

4.     Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22 %) increased by 5.6 % in August, 2015 over August, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 0.5 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Natural Gas

5.     The Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71 %) increased by 3.7 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 declined by 2.7 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Refinery Products (93% of Crude Throughput)

6.     Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 5.94%) increased by 5.8 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 4.3 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Fertilizers

7.     Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) increased by 12.6 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 5.9 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Steel (Alloy + Non-Alloy)

8.     Steel production (weight: 6.68%) declined by 5.9 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 declined by 0.03 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Cement

9.     Cement production (weight: 2.41%) increased by 5.4 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 1.8 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Electricity

10.       Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%) increased by 5.6 % in August, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to August, 2015-16 increased by 2.8 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Note 1: Data are provisional. Revision has been made based on revised data received for corresponding month of previous year in respect of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Product, Steel, Cement and Electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month August, 2014 have been revised.

Note 2: Release of the index for September, 2015 will be on Monday, 2^nd November, 2015.

Combined Index of Eight Core Industries for August 2015 is reported at 169.6 with year on year and cumulative April-August increases; provisional sectoral indices show notable monthly gains in refinery products, electricity and fertilizers and a decline in steel. The release provides weights, monthly and yearly indices and growth rates for each constituent industry, notes revisions to prior period indices based on updated source data, and records that refinery product comparability is affected by inclusion of special economic zone production data.
