1. The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries (base: 2004-05) is given at the Annexure.
2. The Eight Core Industries comprise nearly 38 % of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 168.0 in July, 2015, which was 1.1 % higher compared to the index of July, 2014. Its cumulative growth during April to July, 2015-16 was 2.1 %.
Coal
3. Coal production (weight: 4.38 %) increased by 0.3 % in July, 2015 over July, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 5.7 % over corresponding period of previous year.
Crude Oil
4. Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22 %) declined by 0.4 % in July, 2015 over July, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 declined by 0.7 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Natural Gas
5. The Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71 %) declined by 4.4 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 declined by 4.2 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Refinery Products (93% of Crude Throughput)
6. Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 5.94%) increased by 2.9 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 3.9 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Fertilizers
7. Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) increased by 8.6 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 4.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Steel (Alloy + Non-Alloy)
8. Steel production (weight: 6.68%) declined by 2.6 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 1.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Cement
9. Cement production (weight: 2.41%) increased by 1.3 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 1.0 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Electricity
10. Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%) increased by 3.5 % in July, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to July, 2015-16 increased by 2.0 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Note 1: Data are provisional. Revision has been made based on revised data received for corresponding month of previous year in respect of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Product, Steel, Cement and Electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month July, 2014 have been revised.
Note 2: Release of the index for August, 2015 will be on Wednesday, 30th September, 2015.

Core industries index posts modest annual rise with mixed sectoral performance and provisional data revisions. The Index of Eight Core Industries for July 2015 records the combined index at 168.0 with April-July cumulative growth of 2.1 percent. Monthly sectoral movements were mixed: positive contributions from electricity, refinery products, fertilizers, coal and cement, and declines in crude oil, natural gas and steel.
