The import of aluminium scrap and decreasing price of aluminium in international market have an adverse impact on aluminium industry.

The representation received from Aluminium Association of India has requested for increasing basic custom duty on aluminium products from 5% to 10% and to increase basic custom duty on aluminium scrap to bring it at par with the duty on primary metal.  The same has been sent to Department of Revenue for necessary action.   Earlier requests were examined by Department of Revenue as part of the Budget 2015-16 and had not been acceded to.

This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.

Customs duty on aluminium: industry seeks higher duties on products and scrap to curb import pressure; proposal sent for review. Adverse international aluminium prices and increased imports of aluminium scrap prompted the Aluminium Association of India to request raising the basic customs duty on aluminium products and increasing duty on aluminium scrap to parity with primary metal; the representation has been forwarded to the Department of Revenue, and an earlier similar request was considered in Budget 2015-16 but not acceded to.
