1.   The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries (base: 2004-05) is given at the Annexure.

2.   The Eight Core Industries comprise nearly 38% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 177.8 in March, 2015, which was 0.1 % lower compared to the index of March, 2014. Its cumulative growth during April to March, 2014-15was 3.5 %.

Coal

3.   Coal production (weight: 4.38%) increased by 6.0 % in March, 2015over March, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 8.2% over corresponding period of previous year.

Crude Oil

4.   Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22%) increased by 1.7 % in March, 2015over March, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 0.9 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Natural Gas

5.   The Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71%) declined by 1.5 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 5.2 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Refinery Products (0.93% of Crude Throughput)

6.   Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 5.94%) declined by 1.3 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 0.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Fertilizers

7.   Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%)increased by5.2 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 0.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Steel (Alloy + Non-Alloy)

8.   Steel production (weight: 6.68%) declined by 4.4 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 0.5 %over the corresponding period of previous year.

Cement

9.   Cement production (weight: 2.41%) declined by 4.2 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15increased by 5.6 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Electricity

10. Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%)increased by 1.7 % in March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by8.0 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

 Note 1:Data are provisional. Revision has been made based on revised data received for corresponding month of previous year in respect of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Product, Steel, Cement and Electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month March, 2014 have been revised.

Note 2: Release of the index for April, 2015 will be on Monday, 01^st June, 2015.

The Index of Eight Core Industries for March 2015 is 177.8, down 0.1% year on year, with April-March 2014-15 cumulative growth of 3.5%. Sectoral outcomes vary: coal and electricity show positive cumulative gains; crude oil and natural gas record cumulative declines; refinery products and other sectors display mixed monthly and annual movements. Data are provisional and revised March 2014 indices reflect updated inputs; a comparability qualification applies to refinery products.
