India Cuts Petroleum Subsidies; Launches Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG and Enhances Public Distribution System Efficiency.
The Government of India has detailed subsidy allocations across various sectors, noting a decrease in petroleum subsidies from 2012 to 2016. A new Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Scheme for LPG was launched in January 2015, ensuring subsidies are directly transferred to customers' bank accounts, reducing duplication and leakages. The government is also working on computerizing the Public Distribution System (PDS) nationwide, with 11 states already implementing the National Food Security Act. Efforts to achieve universal Aadhaar coverage aim to enhance the efficiency of the PDS system. These initiatives were outlined by a government official in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
