The Reserve Bank of India has  announced that an individual can now carry to Nepal and Bhutan Indian currency notes in denominations of ₹ 500 and/or ₹ 1,000, subject to a limit of ₹ 25,000. Earlier, individuals travelling to Nepal and Bhutan were allowed to carry Indian currency without any limit in denomination of only up to ₹ 100. This has been relaxed to mitigate the hardship faced by individuals travelling to Nepal and Bhutan from India.

The Reserve Bank of India has suitably amended the regulations to incorporate the relaxation.

Currency carriage rules now allow higher denomination Indian notes to Nepal and Bhutan, subject to an overall monetary limit. Permits individuals travelling to Nepal and Bhutan to carry Indian currency notes in denominations of 500 and 1,000 subject to a cap of 25,000, replacing the earlier position which allowed only denominations up to 100 without an overall limit; the change was implemented by amendment to the existing regulations to ease hardship for travellers and clarify cross border cash carriage rules.
