Previously a professor at the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, he has held roles such as Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies and consultant to the Union Finance Ministry. He chaired the High Powered Committee on Railways restructuring and has been affiliated with several prestigious academic institutions. Born in 1955, he is also an accomplished author, having written extensively on economic issues and produced a ten-volume English translation of the Mahabharata.
