Indian Patent Applications Rise to 25% in 2013-14; Awareness Programs Boost Filing Rates.
Patent applications by Indian applicants increased to 25% in 2013-14 from 22% in 2012-13 and 20% in 2011-12. Factors for the low filing rate include limited awareness of the patent system, inadequate planning for patent portfolios, and insufficient research facilities. To address this, the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) conducted numerous awareness programs in collaboration with various organizations. In 2013-14, they organized 28 programs and participated in 96 others. By 2014-15, they engaged in 81 programs, including collaborations with WIPO and state governments. This information was disclosed by a government official in a parliamentary session.
