The Minister of Textiles had requested the Department of Revenue to enhance Basic Customs Duty on Twisted Silk Yarn and Silk fabrics from existing 10% to 15%, in order to protect the domestic industry from cheap imports. The request was not acceded to.

The information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

Basic Customs Duty increase on twisted silk yarn and silk fabrics was sought to protect industry but request was denied. Request to increase Basic Customs Duty on twisted silk yarn and silk fabrics to protect the domestic textile industry was made by the Minister of Textiles, but the Department of Revenue did not accede to the request; this was communicated in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
