The Government aims at giving training in various skills at different levels to have an army of skilled workers in the country.  Currently, the Government of India (GoI) is funding skill development activities through over 70 Government of India schemes spread across more than 20 Government of India Ministries, aimed at making the youth employment ready. Up to March 2014, the number of persons who had been provided skill development training during the previous three financial years was 17.34 million. The achievement during the years 2011-12, 2012-13 & 2013-14 are as under :-

Government of India caters to the different target categories, including youth of the age group of 18-23 years. NSDA which monitors the achievements of these schemes does not have category-wise achievements. Ministry of Rural Development has undertaken a Placement Linked Skill Development Program for rural poor youth in the age group of 18-35 years   with a mandatory requirement that 75% of trained candidates are given placement in jobs. The Ministry of Labour and Employment is implementing three schemes, namely Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), Apprenticeship Training Scheme under the Apprentices Act, 1961, and Skill Development Initiative (SDI) Scheme, for equipping the youth with appropriate skills for self/wage employment.

The Government of India schemes fund trainings through Government Institutions as well as Private Sector. The break-up of persons enrolled in Government Institutions and Private Sector is not available with the NSDA, which monitors the achievements of these schemes.

As informed by NSDA the available details of persons trained and placed under Government of India schemes by different ministries/departments during FY 2012-13 & 2013-14 are given below at Annexure.

Skill development funding expands government-supported training across multiple schemes, with placement-linked targets for rural programs. Government funding supports numerous multi ministry skill development schemes delivering long and short term training to expand workforce readiness, targeting youth and rural poor with placement objectives in some programmes; central monitoring reports aggregate ministry level trainee and placement figures but does not provide category wise or public versus private provider breakdowns.
