India Bans Edible Oil Exports Except for Small Packs; Import Duties on Refined Oils Increased to Protect Local Industry.
The export of edible oils, including palm oil, has been banned since March 2008, with exceptions for branded consumer packs up to 5 kg, subject to a Minimum Export Price (MEP) reduced from USD 1500 to USD 1100 per MT in April 2014. To protect domestic manufacturers, import duties on refined edible oils increased from 7.5% to 10% in January 2014, while crude oil duties remain at 2.5%. The data shows significant palm oil imports from Indonesia and Malaysia over the past three years, with detailed export and import figures provided for various countries.
