A peer evaluation of the existing AEZs was carried out in 2005 to assess the performance of AEZs. On the basis of the recommendations of the Peer Group in 2005, it was decided not to consider notification of new AEZs unless there were strong compelling reasons.

The information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Dr. D. Purandeswari in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Agri Export Zones moratorium: new AEZ notifications restricted pending compelling reasons following peer evaluation and review. DGFT-notified sixty Agri Export Zones across various states, each with specified commodity and district focus, have completed their initial five-year spans. A 2005 peer evaluation assessed AEZ performance and led to a policy decision to refrain from notifying new AEZs unless strong, compelling reasons are shown. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry disclosed these facts and the conditional restraint on fresh notifications in a parliamentary reply.
