Search is not Issue with Search Functionality Showing Irrelevant Result

Dhruva

I am not getting relevant results while searching on the D forum or Advance search button. I am trying to find discussions on specific legal discussions, answers questions, such as why a notice cannot be issued merely due to a difference between turnover reported in GSTR-8 (TCS return) and GSTR-3B.

However, when I search using keywords like 'section 52', 'TCS', and 'GSTR-3B', the results are not focused. The system is showing all results containing any of these words separately, instead of combining them to give relevant discussions on the exact issue.

Ideally, the search should understand the full context and show results where all these concepts are connected, rather than displaying unrelated content with just one matching keyword.

Contextual legal search limitations highlight the need for Boolean logic, phrase matching, and relevance-based results. The document discusses limitations in a legal forum's search functionality, where queries entered with multiple keywords do not return contextually relevant results. Instead of identifying discussions in which the searched concepts are connected, the search appears to match terms individually and produce unrelated content. The document suggests that better search functionality should include contextual relevance, Boolean logic, phrase-based searching, and prioritisation of results where all queried concepts are addressed together. Subject: Limitation in Advanced Search Functionality - Lack of Contextual Result Filtering

  1. Issue Observed
    While using the "D Forum" and the "Advanced Search" feature, it has been observed that search results are not aligned with the intended legal query. Specifically, searches using multiple keywords such as "Section 52", "TCS", and "GSTR-3B" yield results containing any one of these terms independently, rather than providing discussions where all terms are contextually linked.
  2. Nature of Limitation
    The current search mechanism appears to rely on isolated keyword indexing instead of applying Boolean logic (e.g., AND conditions) or contextual relevance. As a result, the output includes broadly matched content rather than focused discussions addressing the specific legal issue-such as the validity of issuing notices solely on the basis of discrepancies between GSTR-8 and GSTR-3B.
  3. Impact on Legal Research
    This limitation significantly affects the efficiency and accuracy of legal research. Users seeking precise interpretational discussions or precedent-based clarifications are required to manually filter through large volumes of unrelated content, leading to increased time and effort.
  4. Expected Functionality
    Ideally, the search tool should:
  • Support Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to refine queries;
  • Recognize phrase-based searches (e.g., "Section 52 TCS mismatch with GSTR-3B");
  • Deliver results based on contextual relevance rather than standalone keyword presence;
  • Prioritize discussions where all queried concepts are substantively addressed together.
  1. Suggested Workarounds
    Until such enhancements are implemented, the following approaches may improve results:
  • Use quotation marks for exact phrases (if supported);
  • Reduce the number of keywords and search iteratively;
  • Include more specific phrases such as "GSTR-8 vs GSTR-3B notice validity";
  • Filter results manually by category or date, where available.

Conclusion
The current search limitations hinder targeted legal research. Implementation of context-aware and Boolean-based search capabilities would significantly improve usability and result accuracy for professional users.
