Per diem worker in Saudi Arabia queries NRI status, tax refunds, and business expense reimbursements under FEMA. An individual working on a per diem basis in Saudi Arabia with salary credited in India inquired about their eligibility for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) status and the tax implications. They asked if they could reclaim taxes paid on their Indian salary and whether reimbursements for business expenses in Saudi Arabia, credited in India, are taxable. A respondent clarified that while the individual might qualify as an NRI, taxes paid in India on income received there cannot be refunded. Reimbursements may not be taxed, subject to Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) limits. (AI Summary)
