Ministry clarifies arecanuts require import licenses, not classified as dry fruits under Export-Import Policy
The Ministry of Finance issued a circular clarifying that arecanuts (supari) cannot be imported without proper licensing. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade notified that customs authorities at certain ports were incorrectly permitting arecanut imports by classifying them as dry fruits. The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that arecanuts are supari, not dry fruits, and constitute consumer goods requiring import licenses under the Export-Import Policy. The circular instructs all field formations to ensure arecanut imports are not permitted without valid import licenses. Additionally, Chief Commissioners were directed to review all arecanut import cases that were previously cleared as dry fruits during the preceding year and submit reports to the Board.
