Imports by airlines crew: free allowance limited to petty gifts; unauthorised consumer-goods imports treated as confiscable.
Operating airlines crew are not covered by the baggage exemption that applies to bona fide passengers; the raised free allowance to Rs.300 is intended only for small personal gifts and not for costly consumer goods. Consumer goods on the Negative List cannot be imported by crew without an import licence or specific Exim Policy/DGFT permission, and the Baggage Rules do not extend to operating crew. Consequently, unauthorised imports of consumer appliances by crew are liable to confiscation under customs law, and authorities are directed to issue local instructions and notify airlines to advise their crew accordingly.
