Foreign experts under UN and aid programs can import VCR, computers, ACs but customs duties now required
The government clarified customs and import facilities for foreign experts assigned to India under various aid schemes including UN programs, UNDP, Colombo Plan, and bilateral technical cooperation agreements. The circular specifies that experts can import certain items including VCR, video camera, personal computer, and air conditioners (up to 4 per family instead of previous limit of 2). However, these imports are not duty-free and customs duties must be paid by the ministry, department, or agency to which the expert is attached, contrary to previous duty-free provisions for other specified items.
