India Prohibits Foreign Direct Investment in Tobacco Product Manufacturing, Including Cigars and Cigarettes, Effective Immediately.
The Government of India has revised its foreign direct investment (FDI) policy concerning the manufacture of tobacco products. Previously, 100% FDI was permitted with prior approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board for the manufacture of cigars and cigarettes. The new policy prohibits FDI in the manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos, and cigarettes, including those made from tobacco substitutes. This activity is now included in the list of sectors where FDI is prohibited. The amendments to the Consolidated FDI Policy are effective immediately.
