of <h1>Finance & Commerce Ministries Mandate PAN for Importers/Exporters; PAN-Based IEC Required on Customs Docs from April 2000.</h1> The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, has mandated the use of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) as a common identification number for individuals and businesses interacting with various regulatory agencies. Effective from January 1, 2000, importers and exporters must include both their existing Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and PAN on customs documents. From April 1, 2000, only the PAN-based IEC will be used. This initiative aims to streamline identification processes across agencies, improve data sharing, and facilitate risk-based assessment of transactions. Public notices will be issued to inform the trade community.
