Customs baggage clearance now requires body-worn cameras recording passenger interactions, with strict privacy safeguards and mandatory activation rules
A revised SOP mandates use of body worn cameras with audio-video recording by uniformed Customs officers having direct passenger interface during baggage clearance at NSCBI Airport, Kolkata. Officers must activate the camera during passenger interaction and baggage examination and continue recording until completion, and must inform passengers that recording is being done. The SOP prescribes controls for deployment, handling, secure transfer, encrypted storage, role-based access, monitoring, retention and retrieval of recordings, with privacy and data security safeguards; tampering, deletion or unauthorised access is prohibited. Where BWCs cannot be used due to operational exigencies (including malfunction or safety), reasons must be recorded and verified by a supervisory officer. The SOP is effective immediately and is to be followed strictly.
