Customs Department to Equip Boarding Officers with Body Cameras for Enhanced Transparency and Accountability from April 2023.
The Customs Department has issued a public notice to improve transparency in boarding functions by equipping Boarding Officers with jackets fitted with Body Worn Cameras (BWC) for video/audio recording. This initiative, effective from April 15, 2023, aims to enhance professionalism, provide evidence in case of offenses, and protect officers from unfounded complaints. The Boarding Officer's duties include verifying vessel documentation, checking consumable stores, and ensuring compliance with customs regulations. BWCs will be activated upon approaching vessels, and recordings will continue until the officer leaves. Feedback from stakeholders will be collected to assess and improve the process.
