Customs Temporarily Relaxes Notarized Bond Requirement During COVID-19, Allows Undertakings Until April 30, 2020, Per Sections 18, 59, 143.
The Office of the Principal Commissioner of Customs in New Delhi issued Public Notice No. 22/2020 to address challenges faced by importers and Customs Brokers during the COVID-19 lockdown. The notice temporarily relaxes the requirement for notarized bonds under sections 18, 59, and 143 of the Customs Act, 1962, allowing undertakings instead until April 30, 2020. This applies to government entities, manufacturers, authorized economic operators, status holders, and warehouse facility users. Undertakings must be replaced with proper bonds by May 7, 2020. Additional safeguards may apply to other importers requesting this relaxation. Compliance and record-keeping are emphasized.
