of <h1>India Bans Import of Mobile Phones with Fake IMEI Numbers; New SOP for Compliance Effective January 1, 2016.</h1> The circular from the Office of the Principal Commissioner of Customs in Mumbai addresses the implementation of a notification by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) prohibiting the import of mobile phones with duplicate, fake, or non-genuine IMEI numbers. Following a Delhi High Court directive, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been established for enforcement. Mobile manufacturers must register with the GSMA database to obtain IMEI certificates. Importers must submit these certificates for customs clearance, where authenticity checks are conducted. The notice is effective from January 1, 2016, and outlines procedures for compliance and enforcement.
