SEBI Mandates System-Based Margin Calculation by March 31, 2001, to Improve Equity Market Risk Management.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a directive to all stock exchanges to implement system-based calculation of margins on a gross basis, mandating the use of client codes at the broker level. Initially required by February 28, 2001, some exchanges requested additional time for software testing. As a result, the deadline was extended to March 31, 2001. Exchanges failing to comply with this requirement will be prohibited from offering MCFS/ALBM/BLESS facilities. This measure aims to enhance risk management in equity markets by relying on system-generated data rather than self-certification.
