STD/PCO Monitors Reclassified as Calculating Machines Under Heading 84.70 for Consistent Duty Rates.
The Central Board of Excise & Customs has addressed the classification of STD/PCO Monitors, also known as Charge Indicators, due to inconsistencies in duty rates and pricing. Previously classified under Heading No. 90.29 as counting devices, these monitors are now recognized as calculating machines due to their microprocessor-based functions for billing calls. Consequently, they are reclassified under Heading No. 84.70 of the Central Excise Tariff Act, 1985. This decision aims to standardize classification and duty levies. All Commissioners of Central Excise are instructed to disseminate this order to ensure compliance with the Central Excise Act, 1944.
