CBEC Proposes Reducing Abatement Rates for Six Commodities u/s 4A, Seeks Feedback by May 20, 2009.
The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) seeks feedback from trade and industry associations on a proposal to adjust abatement rates for products assessed under Section 4A of the Central Excise Act, which bases duty on the Retail Sale Price (RSP). A study revealed that for six commodities-paints, color TVs, aerated water, ceramic tiles, cosmetics, and lubricants-the RSP-based value is often lower than the transaction value. CBEC suggests reducing abatement rates to align these values more closely. Comments and supporting data from associations are requested by May 20, 2009.
