India Bans Thuraya Satellite Phones; Mandatory Declaration Required by Maritime Operators in PANS Submission.
The Indian government has banned the import and use of Thuraya satellite phones in India. Steamer agents, main line operators, and customs brokers must declare any Thuraya, Iridium, or similar satellite phones in the Pre Arrival Notification on Security (PANS) to port authorities. The declaration must include the brand or make of the phones in the vessel's stores list and private property list of the master, officers, and crew. Non-compliance or use of unlicensed satellite phones in Indian waters will result in confiscation by customs authorities.
