India Amends Transit Treaty with Nepal: In-Transit Vehicles Can Now Clear Under Own Power via Specific Border Points.
The Government of India has amended the Protocol to the Treaty of Transit with Nepal to permit the clearance of in-transit motor vehicles to Nepal 'on their own power.' This amendment includes conditions such as examination procedures similar to non-containerized cargo, inclusion in the list of sensitive goods, and coverage by insurance or bank guarantees. The vehicles must pass through specific border points: Raxaul-Birgunj, Jogbani-Biratnagar, Sonauli-Bhirahawa, and Nepalgunj Road. Additionally, the amendment modifies transit options for other goods, allowing them via railway wagons, marine containers, or pilfer-proof trucks. Any implementation issues should be reported to the Commissioner of Customs, Kolkata.
