CBEC Clarifies Solar Panel Classification: Power-Supplying Panels Under CTH 8501, Others Under CTH 8541. Report Issues to Customs.
A dispute regarding the classification of solar panels with diodes or other current-regulating elements under Customs Tariff Heading (CTH) 8541 versus 8501 has been addressed. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) clarified that if a solar panel/module supplies power to an external load, it should be classified under CTH 8501. If it does not supply power to an external load, it should be classified under CTH 8541. Importers and Customs Brokers are advised to follow this classification guidance. Any difficulties should be reported to the Commissioner of Customs.
