Legal Metrology Rules Updated: New Definitions for Industrial and Institutional Consumers, Retail Food Packages, and Labeling Requirements.
Amendments have been made to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, as notified by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The amendments redefine 'industrial consumer' and 'institutional consumer,' specifying that packages for these consumers must be labeled 'not for retail sale.' Additionally, a proviso for 'retail food package' definitions is included, aligning with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. From January 1, 2016, packages must display contact details for consumer complaints. Importers, exporters, and customs brokers must declare measurements using approved units under the Legal Metrology Act. Previous notices related to weights and measures are amended accordingly.
